DNA barcodes combined with geometric morphometry challenge species hypothesis in palaemonid shrimp

چکیده
Although the Mediterranean Region is known as a hotspot for biodiversity and endemism its freshwater fauna still greatly unexplored, even emblematic taxa such decapods require in-depth integrative investigation. In our research we used approach composed of various geometric morphometric molecular methods to challenge taxonomic status two shrimps representing Palaemonidae: Palaemon antennarius minos . Basing on 352 COI sequences, three Molecular Operational Taxonomic Units (MOTUs) were defined. Two them belonged P. : first inhabiting Apennine Peninsula Sicily, second one from Balkan Peninsula. The third MOTU corresponded Crete. was closer in terms genetics, than other conspecific MOTU. carapace shape variation, studied 180 individuals, mainly explained by geographic distribution. Cretan groups clearly distinguished, while samples distributed along gradient Sicily southern Balkans. results study showed that, either assigned constitutes separate species or, alternatively, should be synonymised with

Australian Sphingidae – DNA Barcodes Challenge Current Species Boundaries and Distributions
MAIN OBJECTIVE We examine the extent of taxonomic and biogeographical uncertainty in a well-studied group of Australian Lepidoptera, the hawkmoths (Sphingidae). METHODS We analysed the diversity of Australian sphingids through the comparative analysis of their DNA barcodes, supplemented by morphological re-examinations and sequence information from a nuclear marker in selected cases. The resu...
متن کاملDNA barcodes for biosecurity: invasive species identification.
Biosecurity encompasses protecting against any risk through 'biological harm', not least being the economic impact from the spread of pest insects. Molecular diagnostic tools provide valuable support for the rapid and accurate identification of morphologically indistinct alien species. However, these tools currently lack standardization. They are not conducive to adaptation by multiple sectors ...
متن کاملDNA barcodes distinguish species of tropical Lepidoptera.
Although central to much biological research, the identification of species is often difficult. The use of DNA barcodes, short DNA sequences from a standardized region of the genome, has recently been proposed as a tool to facilitate species identification and discovery. However, the effectiveness of DNA barcoding for identifying specimens in species-rich tropical biotas is unknown. Here we sho...
متن کاملIdentifying Canadian mosquito species through DNA barcodes.
A short fragment of mt DNA from the cytochrome c oxidase 1 (CO1) region was used to provide the first CO1 barcodes for 37 species of Canadian mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) from the provinces Ontario and New Brunswick. Sequence variation was analysed in a 617-bp fragment from the 5' end of the CO1 region. Sequences of each mosquito species formed barcode clusters with tight cohesion that were ...
متن کاملTelling plant species apart with DNA: from barcodes to genomes
Land plants underpin a multitude of ecosystem functions, support human livelihoods and represent a critically important component of terrestrial biodiversity-yet many tens of thousands of species await discovery, and plant identification remains a substantial challenge, especially where material is juvenile, fragmented or processed. In this opinion article, we tackle two main topics. Firstly, w...
